2Examination of case issues: Activities

In the following activities, learners are encouraged to identify the various role-players in sports tourism, examine feeder organisations which are required to ensure the success of any type of sporting event, and examine obstacles which may negatively impact on sports tourism.

In this lesson:

Learners will be presented with the case study entitled "Under-Utilisation of Sporting Facilities". Learners will look at the case problem and discuss the issue.  The issue must be examined and learners must be encouraged to think of similar cases in their own area.

Learners will then be required to examine the way in which the case problem was handled and overcome.

Learners are encouraged to interpret the outcome of some of the activities undertaken in the case study.  Examine ways in which they worked or find ways to improve on the problem solving of the case study.

Learners are required to practice some of the issues identified in the case study in their own area.

Tips on how to achieve the above:

Educators organise a field trip to a local sports centre or venue.

Learners will gather information following the same criteria used in the previous lesson.

Two graphs will be compiled for both venues (international stadium examined in previous activity, and local sporting venue) highlighting similarities and differences between the two venues. Learners are to write a report on their findings and explain the shortcomings of their local venue in comparison to the other more established venue and explain why the one venue hosts high profile sports while the local one does not.

The graphs are  displayed on the class notice boards. together with a checklist of all the facilities or qualities, which the local venue has and is lacking.  This will then be used  later as each issue in the chosen venue is identified and resolved.
