INTRODUCTION

This case study contains an educational resource that examines the reasons why a town, teeming with sporting facilities, does not host national and international competitions.

The case study and classroom activities examine possible reasons for this situation, and learners are expected to find possible solutions to resolve this situation.

Specific outcomes of the case study

By the end of the lessons learners will be able to:

Define sports tourism

Explain the benefits of sports tourism

Conduct various forms of research

Identify problems which lead to under-utilisation of resources

Suggest ways in which problems can be resolved
 

THE CASE CONTENT AND THE CURRICULUM

The material contained in this resource is designed for grade 10 learners in the Travel & Tourism learning programme for secondary schools in South Africa, and can be used under the SAQA Unit Standards dealing with types of tourists and benefits of tourism. (Unit Standard 2.1.)
