CASE STUDY

Learners of Kingsway High School's Travel & Tourism class are very proud of their beautiful little town, and after learning about the immense benefits of tourism, they decided to look at ways in which they could encourage tourism in the town. They examined all the resources the town has.  A striking feature of the town was the many sporting facilities the town has which are used only by the locals for leisure purposes.  This is a waste of the valuable facilities the town possesses, and a waste of an important economic-generating commodity.
Complacency in the town regarding their potential as a sporting destination needs to be addressed so that we can capitalise on what we have, for the benefit of all residents of Amazimtoti.

The Case Writers decided to research this problem, and an exciting and educational journey of discovery began

An investigation of the problem revealed:

The town is situated 25km from the metropolis of Durban, which boasts three major sporting stadiums. These can accommodate 10 000 spectators. It also has a swimming stadium which can host International Swimming events, and a tennis stadium with 10 courts. Thus any competition held in the region is held in Durban.  Even smaller events are held in Durban.  Durban thus has a monopoly on sporting events, disadvantaging towns like Amanzimtoti.

Organisers of sporting events give preference to places like Durban rather than considering towns like Amanzimtoti.

Existing sporting facilities in the Amanzimtoti area have fallen into disrepair. Toilets & changing rooms are dirty. Toilet paper is not replaced. Soap holders do not contain soap. Tiles on the walls are falling off. There is no hot water in the showers. And the list goes on.
