1. Introductory activities

In the following activities, learners will be expected to understand that sport is very popular among people and is enjoyed and appreciated by people of different nationalities, colour, gender and religions. Due to its popularity, sports tourism has the ability to target customers worldwide.  Learners will also discover that sport tourism does not only encompass the sportsmen and women who participate, but also  the spectators who attend a sporting event.

In the first lesson, learners will be questioned on the role of sport in their lives and the types of sports they are involved in.  Through brainstorming exercises, it will be established which sporting venues they use. Learners will be provided with the statistics gathered in the case study, which show the spin offs of tourism and sport tourism.  From this a discussion will follow, outlining the benefits of sport tourism and the beneficiaries of tourism to the area.  Learners will then be expected to formulate their own definition of sports tourism, based on the discussion.

Prior to the first lesson, educators will ask learners to collect articles on major sporting events held around the world from newspapers, magazines, Internet, journals. (e.g. Wimbledon, Olympic Games, World Cups, etc).
Class is divided into groups of 5 and each group chooses one article, and must research the sporting event under the following categories:

Number of spectators

Number of competitions held per year

Size of venue

Number of seats in the venue

Security measures in place at the venue

Sponsors

Other businesses which are needed to supplement the event

General appearance of the area

Cleanliness, etc.

Other issues can be added to this list.

Once the research has been completed, the leader of each group is to present their findings to the class.  From this exercise learners should notice that although South Africa does attract sports tourists, it does not attract enough of them.  The lesson should concentrate on how we can boost these numbers. This lesson may take approximately 2 sessions and a few homework sessions.
