LANGUAGES

There are eleven (11) official languages in South Africa. The three most commonly spoken languages in KwaZulu-Natal are English, Afrikaans (a form of Dutch spoken in South Africa) and Zulu (an indigenous Nguni language).

ECONOMY

The town is a well-established business community, situated about 10 km from an industrial area. Informal trading along the busy roads and streets is a common sight. Local people sell avocado pears and arts and crafts to passing tourists.

TOURIST ATTRACTIONS

The beaches are the main attraction in Amanzimtoti. They include Isipingo, Illovo Beach, Tiger Rocks, Dakota Beach, Inyoni Rocks, Doonside, Warner Beach, Winkelspruit and Karridene (see map on previous page).

The Illovo River is ideal for picnics, fishing, bird-watching, and water-sports. Its is an ideal destination for nature lovers.

 

The Amanzimtoti Bird Sanctuary in Umdoni Road is open daily. Entry is free, and it is the perfect destination for picnicking. Besides bird-watching, feeding the wild ducks on the small lake and the resident peacocks makes for a fun and unique experience.

Ilandla Wilds on Insundu Drive is a peaceful Nature Reserve with picturesque picnic areas. In addition there are three guided trails through trees and bush along the stream.

The Japanese Gardens in Fynn Road is a tranquil respite with open lawns and a sun deck near a miniature lake.
