The Tourism Awareness Programme signals an initiative in tourism education involving the Department of Education, the National Tourism Development Authority/Failte Ireland and the Global Travel & Tourism Partnership (GTTP) and incorporates elements of the GTTP developed “Passport” curriculum. Students also have access to a number of international competitions, including, Travel Writing, Photography and a Research Award developed by GTTP member countries, including Ireland.
Two course options are offered: a single term module of 2 to 3 classes per week over 8 to 10 weeks, and a full-year program spread over 3 terms of 8 to 10 weeks. Course completion certificates, which are endorsed by the Department of Education, are available to students who successfully complete either option.

The component parts of the programme include: Economic and Social Aspects of Tourism, Geographical and Ecological Aspects of Tourism, Tourism and Heritage, Tourism and Irish Culture and the History of Food in Ireland.
The tripartite educational project aims to develop students’ inter-personal skills, to promote the national importance of tourism to the economy among young people and to highlight the career opportunities in tourism and hospitality.
