Deutsche Lufthansa AG is an aviation company with worldwide operations. The Company operates five business segments, each of which plays a leading role in its industry. In all, the Lufthansa includes over 400 subsidiaries and associated companies.
Lufthansa provides mobility for passengers and cargo. The strategic business segment Passenger Transportation and Logistics bundle Lufthansa’s core competences. The airlines in the Lufthansa Group are positioned as premium carriers in their respective segments and are among the world leaders. Lufthansa Cargo is also a market leader in international airfreight. It offers a global network, the shortest transport times and high quality standards in many, often highly specialised, product areas.
The Passenger Airline Group carried almost 77 million passengers and 1.5 million tons of cargo in 2009. Lufthansa’s other strategic business segments include MRO ("Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul") of its own aircraft and the aircraft of other 690 other airlines through its Lufthansa Technik unit; Catering, through its LSG Sky Chefs unit, which in 2009 produced 405 million meals for more than 300 airlines, representing more than 30 percent of the global airline catering market share, and IT ("Information Technology") through its Lufthansa Systems unit, which in 2008 served more than 340 customers, including 200 airlines. Company units operated 722 aircraft in 2009 and employed 112,320 people.
