Instructors

The GTTP and its member countries have developed curriculum materials for teaching travel & tourism-related classes such as ideas for ways to link students and teachers in member countries and case studies. These are included below and can be downloaded for use in your classroom. We request that you acknowledge the GTTP as the source for these materials.

Each year, the GTTP member country schools compete for Aldo Papone Awards which are given in honor of a former President of American Express. The schools prepare a proposal for a case study which can be used in their country's schools and in all GTTP member countries. The winning school in each country prepares its case study and presents it at the annual GTTP Teacher & Student Conference which is held in the fall. In 2000, the research topic was national parks. The student case studies which are included in this section of the web site were prepared by students in the winning school in each country.

The conference and case study topic for 2001 is "Sports Tourism". Watch this space for the winning studies.

Internships

Internships are an important part of a student's educational experience. There is no substitute for the opportunity to see how a business operates, to see how customers and business employees relate to each other, to see what kinds of skills and attitudes are needed at a job.

The GTTP member countries want every student to have this experience, but it requires that there are enough businesses to absorb all the interested students. For this reason, internships are not always available to all students. In some member countries, internships are work study agreements that allow students to work throughout a school year at a business. In many countries, the internship is a much shorter experience. For example, in Ireland, the curriculum for the Travel & Tourism Program is 150 hours, 30 of which are devoted to an internship experience at a cooperating Irish business.

For countries that are just starting to develop internships, the GTTP has prepared a manual which provides information for employers, the internship supervisor, students, teachers and parents. This guide can be downloaded and used by GTTP member schools. It is a basic guide which can be adapted to the particular requirements of a given country.

The GTTP Travel & Tourism Internship/Work Study Manual can be viewed in MS Word format by clicking here.

Bonnie Stevens, the Director of the Canadian program, has developed a manual that tells how to establish links among member country schools. This manual can be viewed by clicking here.
