The South Africa Travel & Tourism Programme, with some 260,000 learners in approximately 1600 schools in all 9 Provinces in November of 2007, is managed by the
National Business Initiative - (NBI) - a business driven organisation that focuses on socio-economic development in South Africa. The NBI views the Travel & Tourism Programme in Secondary Schools as valuable and integral to its existing programmes. As a result the NBI has incorporated the South Africa programme into its existing structures as a distinct project managed by the NBI.

The National Business Initiative (NBI) is a not-for-profit, voluntary business coalition comprising 140 leading South African and multinational corporations working together for an enduring democracy, growing economy, thriving society and a healthy environment in South Africa. The NBI’s mission is to enhance the business contribution to sustainable growth and development in support of national interests through partnerships, projects and policy engagement, focusing on education and skills, energy and climate and economic enterprise.

The NBI has been instrumental in mobilising the private sector to support education and training in South Africa. The NBI’s programmes in the important field of tourism have ranged from supporting high level tourism marketing, job creation and training initiatives through the Business Trust, to a variety of local level tourism promotion and economic development initiatives. The NBI’s current work in education and skills is focused on the Travel & Tourism Programme, which is sponsored by local partners and eight global partners: Amadeus, S.A.,Hogg Robinson Group (HRG), The Hertz Companies, KLM, Lufthansa, Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide and the World Travel & Tourism Council. The sponsors aim to promote tourism as a secondary school subject. The South Africa Programme introduces high school learners to careers available in the tourism industry and provides a vital link between the classroom and the working world.

Recently the NBI partnered with the Department of Environmental Affairs and Tourism (DEAT) and the Tourism Hospitality and Sport Education and Training Authority (THETA) to build a skills partnership in tourism that will address the skills challenges currently facing the sector as well as stimulate transformation within the industry.
Currently, the NBI is the Secretariat to President Mbeki’s Big Business Working Group and the Deputy President’s Joint Initiative on Priority Skills Acquisition (JIPSA).

The NBI is also the regional partner of the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD)
