As added value: international development opportunities for Canadian teachers encompassing study visits, exchanges and enhancing career development

1. Criteria to be Covered in Activity

• purpose
• objectives – curriculum links
• times/schedule – public holidays/vacations – school/college calendar
• administration requirements – letters, documentation, liaison
• itineraries
• visits/activities
• cost/budgeting
• fund-raising
• supervision
• planning a student exchange visit (real or simulated)

2. Brainstorm destinations with a focus.

3. Consider each of the following as part of a reality check:

• affordability
• practicality
• meet objectives
• time constraints
• administration approval

4. Schedule time for planning, preparation, and to focus in on your destination.

5. Work through the following using the problem solving model:

• What is the destination?
• Preliminary research:
  • travel arrangement: costs (alternative modes of travel)
  • accommodation: costs (alternative modes of accommodation)
  • events, sights & activities: costs
• Presentation of the alternatives of the preliminary research
• Analysis of the alternatives presented, considering:
  • cost constraints
  • objectives
  • time constraints
• What's my plan?
  • Identify key players to implement the plan
  • Prepare information flyer to advise parents, students & administration
  • Key players conference with facilitator(s)
  • Set time lines for the formalization of plan and implementation of the trip
  • Make arrangements with transportation & accommodation providers
  • Make arrangements for events, sights and activities
  • Make arrangements for collection and/or disbursement of funds taking all deadline dates into consideration
  • Ensure appropriate school policy release forms are obtained
• What might happen if...?
• Brainstorm
• Brainstorm resolutions
• Try it out - Take the exchange!
