Meeting Themes
Nancy Needham (NN) gave an introduction to the GTTP 1999 Annual Meeting, saying its purposes were basically twofold: 1) to examine transformation and institutionalization of individual TTP country programs and of the GTTP as a whole, and 2) to talk about ecotourism and cultural tourism, with particular reference to Brazil and Hungary. Sabi Sabi is example of ecotourism and Michel Girardin, Operations Director will discuss Sabi Sabi and issues around ecotourism in South Africa.
NN described GTTP as now "growing up" and asked the Directors to consider the following:
How do you institutionalize your program so that it will continue when youre gone?
The majority of GTTP country member programs have the original Director; Brazil and the UK both have new Directors, but attempts to find successors in several programs have not been successful. Several programs, notably the UK and Brazil, have transformed their operations to meet changing circumstances. The role of the Global Partners is, like the GTTP itself, evolving; the Global Partners are defining such elements as the criteria for the allocation of funds, and asking us to define our roles and strategies to them.
